Natural & Safe Skin Care Products

We pride ourselves in being a "green" company.  As a result, we are always looking for products that are made from natural, plentiful resources and products that are safe for our environment and our bodies.

As part of our "Going  Green" classes, we not only teach you to be informed consumers and read ingredient labels, we offer skin care products that are made of all natural ingredients and are free of any chemical or petroleum products, scents, and colorings.  We shopped around for months trying to find affordable, high-quality products to offer our friends, family, and others.  We finally found what we were looking for!  But why did we go through such  trouble to do this?  Here's why:

M  Did you know cosmetics contain a long list of chemicals, most synthetic and petroleum-based, that trigger health problems as mild as skin irritation and as severe as cancer, neurological damage and disruption of the body's hormone systems?

M   Did you know that in this industry, the federal government does not require manufacturers to demonstrate the safety of their products' ingredients?

M   Did you know the FDA and the industry's Cosmetic Ingredient Review have safety information on only 11 percent of the 10,500 ingredients currently in use?

Next time you are out shopping for skin care products, look at the ingredients.  Learn what the ingredients are and what ingredients to avoid.  We have databases available for you to get the most current information about each ingredient and if they are considered safe or harmful.  Consider taking a different approach and learn more about how natural plant ingredients can be more beneficial and effective for your skin.

We want to provide the consumers of Roanoke with an opportunity to create their own personalized skin care products that are perfect for their skin types.  These make great gifts too!

  • We can get together at your home for a "Customized Skin Care Party".  We'll gather information about what kind of skin type the participants think they have, then assess to be sure.  We'll provide you with information about the organic oils we use to benefit our skin types.  Then we get to work "cooking" up our individualized recipes for each person.

  • You can create cleansers, moisturizers, lotions, and soaps & shampoos that heal, reduce wrinkles, minimize dark spots, hydrate your skin, provide antioxidants, and more great benefits, for a fraction of the cost you'd pay if you bought them over the counter.  It's fun and exciting and a great learning experience!  These products make wonderful, personal gifts that are great to share.

  • You can add your own carrier and essential oils and scents to create custom made products for yourself, your friends, or family members.  We've got the bases already made up and we're always making more upon requests.  Our bases are made from only natural, plant-derived ingredients and typically have a shelf life of two years.  We encourage you to bring in your reused sterilized containers that are anywhere from 2 to 8 ounces.  We believe in making small quantities because the ingredients are natural.  Our bases have been made in bulk form (64-oz).  If not used by clean hands, any natural product can become contaminated quickly.  We want you to enjoy the benefits of using these products and minimize waste.

The "Dirty Dozen"  -- ingredients to AVOID in skin care products:

In our classes we help you learn where to find natural products, what certifications to look for, what to avoid, and how you can make your own products.  Below is a list of twelve ingredients to avoid.  We challenge you to look at the products you have in your bathrooms and kitchens.  Look to see if any of these ingredients are listed.  Remember, if the ingredients are listed first, there is more of it in the product.  If the ingredient is at the end of the list, there is less of it in the product.

Google the ingredients and read about them.  Please don't decide to throw out all your "dirty products" at one time.  Make the switch gradually.  Keep in mind that anything you dispose of down the drain goes into our water supply.  Containers you throw away fill our landfills.  Reuse the containers that are easy to clean thoroughly (can be placed in the dishwasher).  Here is the list:

   Antibacterials

Coal tar colors:  FD&C Blue 1, Green 3

   Diethanolamine (DEA)

1, 4-Dioxane (present in sodium laureth and other -eth  ingredients)

Formaldehyde (from urea-based and quaternium preservatives)

   Fragrance

   Hydroquinone

   Mercury and lead

   Nanoparticles

Parabens (methyl-, ethyl-, propyl-, butyl-, isobutyl-)

   Petroleum distillates

   Phenylenediamine (PPD)

If purchasing new products, look for certification symbols like the ones below.  Remember, even though the package says the product is made of natural ingredients, there may be a host of other non-natural ingredients inside!  Purchasing your products at Natural Food Stores and in the health food part of your favorite grocery store will help you narrow down your search for quality natural or organic products.  If you are ever in question about a product, call the company or the store itself.  Get the answers you need to make educated choices.

The convenience of shopping under one roof is a thing of the past if you want quality, safe products.  Our hope is that this will change and stores will begin to realize that consumers are becoming better educated about what they buy and why.  In the end, they will begin to have higher quality, more natural products on their shelves for customers to purchase.  You can help make a difference in how you shop.  It all begins with the power of ONE -- You!
